» State Board of Elections warns voters of reports of people falsely ... - The Daily Gazette

The state Board of Elections (BOE) said there have been reports of people across multiple counties throughout the state that have been going door-to-door while impersonating county Board of Elections staff.

The state BOE said the impersonators are confronting voters about their registration status and falsely accusing voters of committing a crime because of how they appear in the state voter database.

“We are extremely alarmed by these actions. These individuals are impersonating government officials in an effort to intimidate voters based on inaccurate and misleading information,” Raymond Riley III, co-executive director of the state Board of Elections. “We strongly encourage those engaging in these activities to cease immediately.”

The Schenectady County Election Commissioners Laura Fronk and Darlene Harris said its staff does not go door-to-door and all contact is done in-person at the BOE offices, by telephone, by email or by U.S. Postal Service. Staff do not visit homes or voters in person unless they have called to make arrangements beforehand.

“While we are not aware of any incidents happening within Schenectady County, we wanted to warn our voters about this issue,” Fronk and Harris wrote in a statement. ““If someone claiming to be from the Board of Elections shows up at your doorstep we ask that you gather as much identifying information about them as you can and report the incident to your local law enforcement agency and our office as soon as possible.”
