BUKIT MERTAJAM: An aide to Bukit Mertajam member of parliament Steven Sim Chee Keong has lodged a police report over "defamatory and provocative" social media claims regarding the alleged relocation of Bukit Mertajam Hospital.
Lim Zheng Han said the report was made today following a Facebook post containing elements of racial and religious incitement alongside inaccurate claims about the facility.
He said the post, uploaded on March 22 by a Facebook account identified as "Hamly Hadi", used a screenshot from a video of Sim's visit to the hospital on Sept 15 last year.
"The visit was intended to review basic facilities and assess upgrading needs.
"However, the post was accompanied by an unfounded caption claiming that 'Bukit Mertajam Hospital will be relocated to avoid disturbing an Indian temple — Steven Sim Chee Keong'," he said today.
Lim said the claim was false, misleading and made with malicious intent.
He clarified that there had been no proposal to relocate the hospital, adding that authorities were instead studying plans to construct an additional building at the existing site to accommodate rising patient numbers.
"Such slander not only tarnishes the image of Steven Sim, but also risks causing tension and undermining harmony in Malaysia's multiracial society," he added.
Lim said the act could constitute offences under several laws, including Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, Sections 499 and 500 of the Penal Code for defamation, and...
