Eight high school juniors from Shelter Island, Mattituck, Greenport and Southold schools got their first taste of law enforcement on April 2 during a “job shadow day” last week with the Southold Police Department.
The Islanders participating were Kat Austin, Susie Kane and Mackenzie Speece.
After a discussion regarding the department and what it takes to be one of its officers, the students toured headquarters and observed dispatch officers answering 911 calls.
Over the next couple of hours, they got firsthand experience spotting motorists speeding down Route 48, watched a K-9 sniff out evidence and sat in the cockpit of a Suffolk County Police Department helicopter.
Shadow days allow young people in the community a chance to learn about a career that interests them. In addition to the Police Department, students have observed tradesmen at Port of Egypt Marine in Southold, shadowed teachers in their schools and worked alongside other local professionals who volunteered to participate.
At Southold Police headquarters, there is never a shortage of officers looking to participate in the annual event.
“It’s a break from their normal duties during the daytime,” Chief Martin Flatley said. “They like to show off what they do and explain what they do. They have kids in the school districts, too, so there’s never any problem getting volunteers for this day.”
