Sunday Times letters: PM’s integrity and donor’s false claim - The Times

The prime minister has repeatedly talked about the importance of honesty, integrity and public trust in politics. He has been in power for 18 months now and those statements already appear rather threadbare. Sir Keir Starmer’s nomination to the Lords of a Labour donor who has been found to have lied about her academic qualifications (“Newly appointed Starmer peer admits she falsely claimed she had PhD”, Dec 21) casts further doubt on whether the PM believes what he says or just knows how to spin a winning line.

Starmer’s continued support for Dame Ann Limb’s elevation, combined with his apparent tolerance of his chancellor’s creative approach to her CV, would not only confirm his willingness to overlook the false claims of donors and supporters but would also suggest that his own claims to be a champion of honesty and integrity were merely a self-serving fabrication. His pronouncements surely compel him to withdraw Limb’s nomination at once.

For those of us who have earned a PhD by completing their programme and having their dissertation examined and accepted, using the title “Dr” is discretionary. I was awarded my PhD in 1974 by the University of Surrey where, according to her personal website, Dame Ann Limb is now pro-chancellor.
I ordinarily don’t bandy my title about but I will today. Using the title doctor of philosophy if you have not earned it is not discretionary. Limb admits the claim that she has a PhD was false but...
