Supreme Court won’t block vaccine mandate

The Supreme Court has spoken, and it won’t stop New York’s mandate that health care workers to get vaccinated, even if they object to it for religious reasons.

The New York case wound its way to the nation’s highest court because a group of doctors and nurses challenged the state’s decision to require the vaccine without offering a religious exemption, one of just three states to do so. But the majority of the court turned back their emergency appeal, letting the mandate stand.

The ruling came in an unsigned order that did not explain its reasoning. But the high court was divided, with the three more conservative justices dissenting and saying they would have blocked New York’s regulation. In a dissent, Justice Neil Gorsuch noted that former Gov. Andrew Cuomo had indicated there would be a religious exemption but Gov. Kathy Hochul opted against it, chastising her for comments that people who refuse vaccines are not doing what God wants. “Now, thousands of New York healthcare workers face the loss of their jobs and eligibility for unemployment benefits,” he wrote.

It’s a victory for Hochul, who has faced some controversy over her pandemic management as of late (including from primary opponent Rep.
