Suspect naming in Baznas graft whistleblower case raises concerns - The Jakarta Post

A

former employee of the West Java regional office of the National Alms Agency (Baznas) has been named a suspect after filing reports of alleged corruption within the agency, raising concerns over the lack of legal protection for whistleblowers.

The West Java Police named Tri Yanto, former head of the compliance and audit unit at the West Java Baznas office, a suspect for allegedly illegally accessing the agency’s database and distributing internal documents, in violation of the Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) Law.

The suspect naming took place after investigators of the West Java Police’s cybercrime directorate interrogated Tri on Monday, following a report submitted by West Java Baznas deputy head Achmad Ridwan in March.

Tri was not immediately detained by the police after being named a suspect.

After he was fired from the alms agency in 2023, Tri allegedly “distributed some classified information about Baznas to various institutions,” said West Java Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Hendra Rochmawan on Monday, as quoted by Kompas.com.

Tri previously reported the leadership of West Java Baznas for allegedly committing corruption between 2021 and 2023, involving Rp 9.8 billion (US$600,491) in zakat funds and Rp 3.5 billion in grants from the West Java provincial administration.
