BRYSON CITY, N.C. (WLOS) — The Swain County Sheriff's Office warns about a social media scam circulating false claims of a serial killer in the area.
According to the sheriff's office, the fraudulent posts claim that a man is knocking on doors under the guise of needing help and then attacking residents.
One narrative falsely claims that the man stabbed a mother in front of her children. Another fabricated scenario suggests he helped an elderly woman with her groceries before stealing her van.
