A Conservative councillor was disappointed by what she saw as a watering down of her motion to make Swindon Borough Council’s support for whistleblowers more robust.
Councillor Jo Morris, the shadow member for children’s services introduced a motion to the council last week saying the Lucy Letby case, where concerns raised by colleagues of the nurse convicted of the murder of seven babies were ignored, showed the need to believe whistleblowers.
Her motion mandated "a report to the Standards Committee into a review of Whistleblowing and associated policies within the council to ensure that they are robust and an internal communications campaign to ensure whistleblowing signs are erected in relevant places where they will be seen by colleagues”.
The Labour administration brought an amendment that said the chairman of the Standards Committee would review the current policy and if it needed beefing up, the committee would look at, and advise on, the matter.
The amendment was passed and therefore became the substantive motion, which was passed by Labour votes, with Conservative members voting against it.
Cllr Morris said: “The amendment isn’t enough. There is a need to constantly remind colleagues of the policy on whistleblowing.
