A South London business owner accused of running a Chinese state police station has demanded apologies for damage to his reputation.

Riuyou Lin, the founder of a takeaway delivery app, has been caught in a geopolitical storm since late 2022 when stunning allegations emerged about his office being used as an overseas base for China’s police.

The business owner claimed he was the victim of harassment and suffered huge amounts of stress over the claims, which prompted a police investigation.

From the outset, Mr Lin protested his innocence and suggested the whole debacle was the result of a misunderstanding caused by his offer to help Chinese ex-pats carry out administrative tasks, such as renewing their driver’s license, which comes under the remit of the police service in the East Asian nation.

In a written statement to Parliament last week, Tom Tugendhat, the minister of state for security revealed a police investigation had, so far, found no “evidence of illegal activity on behalf of the Chinese state.”
