Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has provided an update on the Gardai investigation into the allegations made against him which he deems ‘false’.
Last year Gardai began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the passing of a proposed new GP contract to a friend of the Tanaiste over two years ago.
Mr Varadkar is hopeful that the investigation is ‘nearing a conclusion’ but doesn’t know if that will be the case and he’s ‘heard that before’.
‘All I can say is what I’ve said before is that I first heard about this investigation through the media around this time last year, I co-operated fully, was interviewed, answered all questions, provided devices and documents, have heard nothing since.
‘I’d be keen to have it concluded as soon as possible but I can’t interfere in the investigation in any way and there’s nothing I can do to force the pace of it. I just hope that it will be concluded soon,’ he said to Claire Byrne on RTE Radio One.
The Tanaiste says that he has heard ‘nothing at all’ since Gardai made their initial enquiry last April.
Mr Varadkar says the possibility of it impacting the transition of him becoming Taoiseach again is not a concern of his as he just wants it to be ‘concluded’.
‘I think others would too, even my critics and opponents were saying “it’s gone on for a long time” and that was back in August. Sinn Fein and Social Democrats were saying “it’s gone on for a long time”,’ he said.
