Tehama County counsel recaps year of law work - Red Bluff Daily News

RED BLUFF— Tehama County Counsel Margaret Long Tuesday gave a presentation on her office’s work and its role in the county during the Board of Supervisors meeting.

The county counsel office does not perform ligation but oversees it. The counsel oversaw 29 cases in the last nine months, participated in two national ligation cases involving opioids and fire and obtained 48 judgments.

The office works with Tehama County Code Enforcement as well. According to Long, 63 parcels were cited for code enforcement violations in the last few months. Of that number, 16 of those have been diverted to civil judgment.

After centralizing the program of public records, the county council has received 249 public records requests in the past year.

“Some of them are quick,” Long said. “A majority of them are long responses, hundreds of 1000s of pages that have to be looked through as part of our responsibility to make sure that no confidential information as specified by state law and the Public Records Act was released.”

Counsel performed 86 contract reviews for the sheriff’s office, 55 for social services, 24 for agriculture and 90 for administration. This totals 329 contract reviews in the last nine months.

Some residents were skeptical of the county counsel’s performance. Tehama County resident Martha Claycamp asked if any department legal advice from the county counsel on personnel or private matters.

Chairman Bill Moule said it was safe to assume this did not happen.
