BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (WSMV) - A Tennessee doctor has pleaded guilty to committing millions of dollars’ worth of Medicare fraud through her Brentwood optometry practice.
Helen Boerman, 48, pleaded guilty this week to helping defraud Medicare out of $6.9 million, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Middle District of Tennessee.
Prosecutors say she used her practice, Brentwood Eye Care, to file false Medicare claims for three and a half years.
“As an enrolled provider, she submitted false claims seeking reimbursements from Medicare for new wound care products she had not actually purchased or used because she split wound care products intended for single use,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
The press release says Boerman sent in claims in May of 2022 for two patients enrolled in Medicare. The claims were for wound care products on May 20, 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27, but the patients only had appointments on three of the six days listed.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office also says the doctor “directed the staff at Brentwood Eye Care to create false records for the other dates to support the services fraudulently billed to Medicare.”
The 48-year-old also submitted false claims to TennCare between March 2020 and October 2024 and the Federal Employees Health Benefits Programs, per prosecutors.
