Texas Congressman advocates for work visas over temporary legal status - FOX 29

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14) — The City of El Paso has continually dealt with the ongoing migrant situation and is once again seeing an influx of migrants.

Sacred heart church is an area that was once considered the epi-center of the crisis, while the numbers are not as high as they were in May before the expiration of Title 42, they have risen once again.

Throughout the month of September, the El Paso Border Patrol Sector encountered between 1,300 and 2,000 migrants per day.

In an interview with CNN, Texas Congressman Tony Gonzales said he met with the United States Secreatry of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.

Gonzales said he and Mayorkas spoke about the expansion of the temporary legal status for Venezuelan migrants, which is something Gonzales said is "undermining legal immigration."

“All you're doing is undermining the legal aspect. Imagine if you're from India and you're a doctor and you're trying to come here to work. But someone from Venezuela is cutting the line," Gonzales said.

Instead, Gonzales is working toward a bill called the "Higher Act" which would focus on "legal immigration through work visas," Gonzales said.

Gonzales said regardless of what the "solution" to the migrant situation is, it will require both republicans and democrats to work together.

“Long term, Congress has to lead in a bipartisan manner that is real solutions. I think that starts through legal pathways like work visas," Gonzales said.
