Thank God for whistleblowers - PantherNOW

Universities present themselves as bastions of free speech, places where ideas can be exchanged under the guise of civility and healthy debate – which is true.

But these notions can only be properly channeled if there is a sense of accountability, and most importantly, transparency.

The recent leak of racist messages from group chats associated with FIU’s chapter of College Republicans and Turning Point USA chapter illustrates exactly why whistleblowers remain essential for justice and public life.

Without the students who chose to expose those conversations, the attitudes expressed within them would likely have remained hidden, insulated from scrutiny while the students involved continued to represent organizations on campus.

Which is exactly why the function of a whistleblower is immortal and necessary, however facile it may seem to just inform others of wrongdoing.

In this case, the whistleblowers sent screenshots of the group chats, as well as chat logs and records, to news outlets, and brought private misconduct by a group of individuals into the realm of public accountability.

At a public university like FIU, the First Amendment protects a wide range of expressions, and students regularly exercise those rights across the ideological spectrum, such as anti-ICE protests or pro-life demonstrations.
