A video circulating widely on social media claims to show decaying bridge supports for the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge, but the bridge isn’t even in Louisiana.
The video, shared on Instagram earlier this week, has a caption on screen reading, “Yikes – these are the supports for the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge that carries Interstate 10 and connects Lafayette and Baton Rouge Louisiana!”
But the claim is false. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development says the bridge’s foundation is not even constructed in the way shown in the video.
According to reporting by NOLA.com, the video was first shared by a user who tagged the location as Caryville, Florida, which is north of Panama City Beach.
The misinformation spread far enough in Louisiana that the Department of Transportation issued a statement on social media addressing the video directly. The agency posted on social media, “We want to clarify that this bridge is NOT in Louisiana.”
Questions remain about the actual location of the bridge in the video and whether the visible deterioration poses a problem. We reached out to The Florida Department of Transportation with some questions.
