BeReal has been described as the perfect way to stay in touch with your friends without the facade and filters.
However, there are hidden dangers to the app, which is why employment lawyer James Watkins from Howells Solicitors has shared the potential implications of posting confidential work information online.
Accidentally uploading an image of your computer screen can have severe repercussions, James comments,
“BeReal asks users to post pictures to their network from the front and rear cameras on their phone. This could be at any time of the day, with added time pressure to take authentic photos quickly in order to ‘be real’.
So what that means is there is a high likelihood users will be encouraged to engage with the platform during working hours, either at their workplace or when working from home. Confidential information belonging to employers could easily be captured in the images by mistake; even just the name of a client or some secret pricing details might be enough to breach obligations of confidentiality and cause irreparable damage.
Screens are not the only areas of danger either: paperwork left on a desk, or a note pinned to the wall could equally land employees (and their employers) in hot water. Employers may face heavy fines, penalties, and other losses and sanctions. Meanwhile employees who make a seemingly innocent mistake could find themselves facing disciplinary consequences up to and including dismissal.”
