THE Internal Revenue Service has expanded its efforts to uncover tax fraudsters, now offering to pay Americans for help targeting them.
Cash rewards up to 30% are up for grabs to whistleblowers as the tax-collecting agency ramps up its search for federal funds fraud.
The IRS has urged Americans with direct knowledge of misuse, diversion, or fraudulent use of federal funds by tax-exempt organizations, individuals, and businesses to report it to the agency.
The Whistleblower Alert from April 17 came as part of a new program to detect and investigate fraud involving federal funds.
“Whistleblower Alerts are a new way for the IRS to spotlight high-risk areas and reach people who may have direct knowledge of noncompliance,” IRS CEO Frank J. Bisignano said in the news release.
“We are expanding how we identify potential fraud, and these alerts will help connect us with individuals who can provide credible, timely information.”
The program is offering payments to whistleblowers worth 15% to 30% of the proceeds collected based on the information they provided.
The reward is intended to incentivize Americans to report “specific, timely, and credible” information about noncompliance with tax laws or other statutes enforced by the IRS to the agency.
Examples of misconduct the IRS is looking to crack down on include false statements or misrepresentations in grant applications, as well as falsely classifying activities to maintain tax-exempt status.
