ABC, NBC and CNN did not carry live coverage of President Donald Trump’s prime-time address on election security on their main platforms on Thursday, while other networks ran the speech in full or cut away for analysis.
During his speech, Trump threatened sanctions against NBC and ABC for the move, calling for a "revocation of their licenses", with the networks instead running live feeds on their streaming channels, which typically attract smaller audiences than the companies’ flagship broadcast and cable channels.
Fox News and Fox Broadcasting aired the president’s speech live, while CBS pre-empted regular programming to air a special report anchored by Tony Dokoupil that joined the live speech a few minutes in and left before it ended. MS NOW started airing the speech, then cut away for analysis and commentary after 17 minutes on host Jen Psaki’s show.
ABC made the address available through ABC News Live and ABC News Radio, while NBC carried it on its NBC News NOW streaming service. CNN offered a live feed on its website and CNN All Access, its subscription streaming platform.
Withholding uninterrupted prime-time coverage is not unprecedented, and major networks have previously declined to interrupt their coverage for presidential addresses, including speeches by Barack Obama in 2014 and Joe Biden in 2022.
