The mayor is still a racist. And he still has to go | Editorial - NJ.com

Sal Bonaccorso finally admitted that it was his voice spewing racist garbage on a whistleblower’s recording, which ends five days of zero doubt and no debate, and now he really needs to leave.

There is no real gray area here, as the mayor of Clark Township seems desperate to convey, with a statement Tuesday that did not conceal his feeble attempt to keep a job he’s held for six terms.

Already exposed as a bigot, he acknowledged that he used the N-word and other vile terms in reference to Blacks and used phrases such as “that’s where we hang the spooks,” and the fact that it was four years ago changes nothing.

It happened while he was the borough’s top elected official performing his official duties – period -- and if the residents of Clark have any standards, they would agree that both his words and his subsequent actions disqualify him for that duty.

Because let’s be clear what happened here:

Bonaccorso dropped racist and sexist trash as a matter of routine, and more often than not, his circle of friends, mostly cops, grunted their assent -- like they’ve heard it all before. Other times, the tribe laughed excessively – a clannish laughter, the laughter of insiders, us-boys. It was not just a slip or some off-color remark that inspired it. It was the kind of slur that defines a culture.
