NEW YORK —

In 2026, the minimum wage is set to increase in 22 states and Washington, D.C.

Most will see the minimum wage rise on Jan. 1, 2026. Those 19 states are Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia and Washington state.

Minimum wage employees living in one of these states who work full-time can expect to see their salaries rise by anywhere between $582.40 and $4,160.

With a $2 increase in their minimum wage, Hawaii will experience the largest growth as employees will soon be paid $16 an hour — the fifth-highest rate in the country. The state last increased its rate in 2024. At $0.28, Minnesota is set to see the smallest increase as they rise from $11.13 to $11.41 an hour.

As for the remaining states, Alaska and Oregon will hike the minimum wage on July 1, 2026. The same is true for Washington, D.C., while Florida's minimum wage will go up on Sept. 30, 2026.

In Oregon and Washington, D.C., officials haven't said exactly how much their minimum wage will rise.

On the national minimum wage

Twenty states have the minimum wage set at or below the federal rate of $7.25 an hour, or have none at all. In short, 40% of minimum wage employees only take home $15,080 a year.
