There is today a world that strives to be linked to the future. There is also another world that is determined to remain captive of the hang-ups of the past and of its defeats.
The one-upmanship of some Palestinians or other Arab actors criticising Morocco’s hosting of Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz is ludicrous if not in bad taste. It is as if Morocco has in the past prevented anyone from trying to liberate Palestine.
Morocco places its own interests above any others. Top of these are the well-being of the Moroccan people and the transformation of Morocco into a developed country with an infrastructure at a European level. Self-respecting Morocco does not need lessons from anyone.
The one-upmanship that we now see shows, above all else, ignorance about Morocco. It is ignorance at all levels about the realities of a country with a special position and with its own concerns. At the forefront of these are anchoring the country in the twenty-first century, continuing the war against poverty and backwardness and shielding the kingdom in the face of the external challenges it faces.
The false claims targeting Morocco these days confirm the existence of two Arab worlds. A world that seeks to connect itself with the future and the technological revolution and another world that remains hostage to the past.
