CHAMBERSBURG – In an effort to uncover fraud in businesses – in particular those geared toward federal benefits, like Medicare and Medicaid, the US Treasury Department is asking for tips from whistleblowers. .
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that, “President Trump has been clear that Americans have a right to know that their tax dollars are not being used to commit fraud. Under President Trump’s leadership, the Treasury will continue to find and disrupt fraud schemes wherever they exist, and we will work with our law enforcement partners to hold perpetrators to account.”
The real kicker is if someone reports fraud and it is discovered, Bessent is saying they could be awarded up to 30% of the fines recovered.
Michele Jansen of News Talk 103.7FM pointed out, “Just the idea that it is whatever sanctions are recovered. Now, sanctions that my understanding can involve both money recovered and the fines on the individuals who have committed these crimes. So any penalties have to exceed a million for it to kick in. So I find that interesting. They said, though often these things far exceed a million dollars in these kinds of directed monies. Also, this is not just for Medicaid, Medicare. There’s also going to be some of the nonprofits and how they’ve tapped into child nutrition programs and misuse of other programs. COVID money could be involved in this and the abuse of that.
