The Grovetown mayor is suing the City of Waynesboro.

A lawsuit alleging the violation of the Georgia Whistleblower Protection Act and the misplacement of thousands of dollars was filed by Grovetown Mayor Gary Jones against the City of Waynesboro and city officials this week.

Here's a breakdown of the lawsuit and a look at Jones' claims.

What is Gary Jones alleging?

The Whistleblower Protection Act protects employees from employer retaliation for reporting any failure to comply with a law, rule or regulation to his supervisor. Jones was an employee of the Waynesboro Police Department before he was fired in October.

According to the lawsuit, Jones began to suspect in September that money being collected by the Waynesboro Municipal Court was missing and had not been deposited into the city’s account.

According to the lawsuit, Jones contends the clerk and her assistants were also failing to comply with several state statutes, including the rules of the Georgia Crime Information Center Council, and that he asked his supervisor, Chief of Police Willie Burley, to request the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to conduct an investigation.
