They weren't paid. They were given HR and manager duties. Former interns say this Silicon Valley startup exploited them - San Francisco Chronicle

It’s commonplace in Silicon Valley and corporate America for a company to engage interns, both paid and unpaid. But it is unusual for a company’s workforce to be predominantly composed of unpaid interns.

Oigetit Fake News Filter, a Sunnyvale company that describes itself as using artificial intelligence to fact-check news articles, appears to rely on an inordinate number of unpaid interns to perform substantial work, according to Chronicle interviews with 10 former interns at the company, who worked there at varying times. Most said they supervised other unpaid interns, totaling more than 100 who reported to them.
