A pattern of harassment against Boston Children’s Hospital in the last week, the result of an online campaign based on false claims about the medical center’s treatments for transgender children, is “disturbing to say the least,” the top federal law enforcement official in Massachusetts said Wednesday.
In a statement, United States Attorney Rachael S. Rollins expressed serious concern over the string of threats that Children’s Hospital said emerged after the facility’s youth transgender health program was targeted by right-wing social media accounts.
In posts throughout the last week, the popular social media account Libs of TikTok made repeated false assertions about the Gender Multispecialty Service Program, or GeMS, which cares for patients with gender dysphoria, a condition in which people identify with a different sex than the one they were assigned at birth.
The account claimed that GeMS — the first pediatric and adolescent transgender health program in the nation — performed gender-affirming surgeries on young children. Children’s Hospital said that was not the case.
In a statement Tuesday, Children’s said the claims made the hospital “the target of a large volume of hostile internet activity, phone calls and harassing emails including threats of violence toward our clinicians and staff.” The hospital said it was working with law enforcement to respond to the threats and protect its staff.
