President on Thursday claimed not to and suggested that his multiple attacks against the over the past week are merely the product of a disagreement over ’s nuclear weapons program — something the pontiff has never spoken publicly about.
Speaking to reporters outside the before he departed for a series of political appearances in Las Vegas and Arizona, Trump while simultaneously claiming that the Pope had voiced approval of Iran’s right to have a nuclear weapon.
“I'm not fighting with him. The pope made a statement. He says Iran can have a nuclear weapon. I say Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said.
Leo, whose real name is Robert Prevost, has never said Iran should be permitted to possess nuclear weapons and has repeatedly spoken out against them, including in a March 5 video in which he prayed that “nations renounce weapons and choose the path of dialogue and diplomacy” so the “the nuclear threat” would “never again dictate the future of humanity."
Nonetheless, the Chicago native has since earlier this week after he criticized the president’s rhetoric towards Iran, including his threats to attack civilian infrastructure and his warning that Iran’s “whole civilization will die ... never to be brought back again” last week as he pressured Tehran to and open the Strait of Hormuz.
