One of Oakland’s assistant city administrators has filed a lawsuit against the political activist Seneca Scott for allegedly harassing and defaming him through a series of online videos.
Harold Duffey, who filed a request for a civil harassment restraining order in Alameda County Superior Court last week, accused Scott of posting videos that falsely claim he has taken bribes and stolen from Oakland residents.
“He is ruining my reputation and impacting my ability to gain employment,” Duffey wrote in his suit.
Duffey is one of the highest-ranking city officials in Oakland. Assistant city administrators are second only to the city’s top official, the city administrator. Duffey plays a major role in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the city. He is also the second city official to seek a restraining order against Scott in less than a year.
Scott is a political activist best known for co-leading the successful recall campaign against former Mayor Sheng Thao. He also runs a YouTube channel called “Gotham Oakland,” where he posted three videos about Duffey in June. In the videos, Scott accused Duffey of making false statements on his resume, hiring “cronies,” engaging in “shakedowns” of businesses, and taking bribes.
Duffey wrote in his lawsuit that the videos contain “at least 26 false claims” and that Scott made “false, defamatory, and harassing statements.”
