Trade union federation legislators request for some restrictions under labour law proposal to be removed - Macau Business

Macau Federation of Trade Unions (FAOM) legislators Ella Lei Cheng I, Leong Sun Iok, Lam Lon Wai and Lei Chan U have jointly suggested providing more protection to employees for organizing or engaging in trade unions, and removing the restrictions that reject civil servants’ participation in the unions.

The Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) has recently released the final report on the public consultation held for the city’s first Trade Union Law, with many opinions opposing the limitations proposed on the right to hold strikes, the type of trade union associations that will be allowed, and the employment sectors covered.

Some 2,653 sets of opinions were received during the consultation period between October 31 and December 14, 2021, totalling 24,537 opinions and suggestions, while about 55.3 per cent of all opinions were submitted by individuals, with 42 per cent by associations and only 2.3 per cent by companies.

The legislators have indicated that the trade union law should be more specific on the protection of workers’ rights of organizing and joining trade unions, so as to prevent possible discrimination and actions to prohibit them from engaging in these activities.
