Trans charity Mermaids has been forced to take down misinformation about puberty blockers by the charities watchdog.
The charity was reprimanded for a series of controversial decisions including its inappropriate promotion of the drugs and chest binders to children in a 22-page report published on Thursday.
The commission said it had ordered Mermaids to take down statements from its website about puberty blockers being “an internationally recognised safe, reversible healthcare option”.
An inquiry was opened into the charity in 2022 after The Telegraph revealed teenagers as young as 13 were being given chest binders against their parents’ wishes.
Concerns were raised by the public and in Parliament, with Miriam Cates, then a Conservative MP, alleging “serious safeguarding failures” and Liz Truss, the former prime minister, saying the allegations “should be properly looked at”.
The watchdog said charities are required by law to ensure information provided on an educational basis is accurate, evidence-based and balanced.
The report said the charity had been “unclear” about whether the information it was providing was a statement of fact or its own opinion.
It added that the charity “should have mechanisms in place to keep their position under review as this is clearly an area of medicine where there is ongoing development and change”.
