Transgender Policy Raises Questions About Two BOE Members - TAPinto.net

To the Editor:

I read the article titled “Board of Education Votes Against Rescinding District Transgender Policies.” Giving credit where it’s due, it was a good read. However, I think it’s worth shining a brighter light on the two board members who voted to rescind Policy #5756.

Board member Lucy Li persisted throughout the meeting with a whirlwind of misleading and often false claims supporting her position to rescind the policy. For example, she:

  1. (0:58:59) Misinterpreted court rulings that included a case involving the Middletown school district. At 1:46:22, Board President Steven Singer cautioned her not to misrepresent court rulings and pointed to her error about the Middletown school district.
  2. (0:59:38) Said that “more than 20 schools” repealed their transgender policies — as if to raise awareness about a major movement throughout NJ… a state with 600 school districts.
  3. (1:45:00) Misrepresented resident Andrew Bucko’s public comment, where he objected to the idea of “singling out” a small minority of students by taking away a policy focused on protecting them. Li flipped Bucko’s comment, falsely claiming that he objected to having a policy for that reason — then agreed with it.
  4. (2:07:40) Falsely claimed that there are already laws that offer the same protections as Policy #5756. Therefore, it “does not serve a purpose.”
  5. (2:08:06) Claimed that it “went beyond what the law or guideline or regulation had required.” At 2:10:09, Steven Singer rebuked the claim,...
