WARREN — Trumbull County jail corrections officers have rejected a fact-finder’s report on a union contract over issues of mandatory overtime and wages.
The contract would be between the Ohio Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, which represents the correction officers and the sheriff’s office.
County commissioners voted 3-0 this month to accept results of the fact-finding report. Members of the patrolmen’s union voted 12 in favor and 42 against accepting the report. Because of the union’s rejection, a proposed contract will be sent to a conciliator, who will make the final determination on each of the disputed issues.
Correction officers, by state law, are not allowed to go on strike.
The patrolmen’s union also represents five other bargaining units that work for the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office. These are the corrections sergeants, corrections lieutenants, deputies, deputy-ranking officers and nonsworn personnel.
Sixty-two members are in the corrections officers bargaining unit, which was formed in 2022. During a mediation that took place June 20, the two sides agreed to nine of 11 issues brought before fact-finder Daniel G. Zeiser.
The sheriff’s office total budget is just over $12.9 million, which was supplemented the last two years with federal CARES Act and American Rescue Plan Act funds. These were temporary funding sources that cannot be relied on long term, county officials have noted.
