A prosecutor handpicked by President Trump was able to secure an indictment of New York’s attorney general, Letitia James, using a tactic that has been increasingly deployed against his perceived political enemies — mortgage fraud.
The indictment accused Ms. James of falsely claiming in loan documents that she would use a home she purchased in Norfolk, Va., as a secondary residence and then using it instead as a rental property. That, the indictment said, would allow her to receive favorable loan terms that would save her close to $19,000, a violation of her mortgage agreement.
Ms. James has called the charges “baseless” and said the indictment was “nothing more than a continuation of the president’s desperate weaponization of our justice system.
