Trump news – live: GOP lawmaker introduces no-hope bill to expunge ex-president’s impeachment - The Independent

A Republican congressman running for a seat in the US Senate has launched a no-hope effort to have Donald Trump’s second impeachment expunged on the basis that “the Democrats’ weaponization of impeachment against President Trump cannot go unanswered in the history books”.

While the bill is under no circumstances going to get to the floor of the current House for a vote, much less pass, introducing it is a useful attention-seeking tactic for the congressman in question, Oklahoma’s Markwayne Mullin. He is currently trying to gather support from the Trump-leaning base as he fights a competitive primary for his state’s open seat in the upper chamber, a safe Republican seat in which the nominee is almost certain to be elected.

Meanwhile, as the 6 January committee prepares for a summer of what promise to be shocking and disturbing hearings about the Capitol riot, Donald Trump has laid into committee member Liz Cheney, claiming that she has taken her opposition to him to extremes.

In an interview with The Washington Post, he called her a “crazed lunatic.” The committee’s first public hearing since last year is set for 9 June.
