With the January 6 select committee prepares to release its final report next week, Donald Trump is ramping up his efforts to delegitimise its findings, falsely claiming once again that Nancy Pelosi was responsible for the Capitol’s vulnerability on the day and even suggesting Democrats “wanted” the violent insurrection to happen.
He made the remarks in an interview on far-right network OAN – one conducted by his own lawyer, Christina Bobb, who is a key figure in the saga of the documents Mr Trump hoarded at Mar-a-Lago.
Mr Trump has failed in his latest effort to thwart the Department of Justice investigation into his retention of the documents, with a judge he himself appointed dismissing a lawsuit brought by his team. The news is the latest blow to the former president’s multi-pronged but largely unsuccessful effort to slow down or end the probe, which he claims is a political witchhunt.
Meanwhile, January 6 select committee member Adam Schiff has confirmed that he and his colleagues on the panel are in agreement that they have “evidence of criminality” – but that while they have agreed on nexst steps, he is not in position to confirm them.
