Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said seven recent claims by US President Donald Trump about Iran were “false” and warned that the Strait of Hormuz “will not remain open” if the US naval blockade of Iranian ports continues.
Trump told AFP there were no “sticking points” left in efforts to reach a deal with Iran, while also posting upbeat messages on social media about apparent progress in talks with Tehran. At the same time, he said the naval blockade would remain in place until what he called a complete agreement was reached.
Earlier on Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said the Strait of Hormuz was “completely open” to commercial vessels during the ceasefire and that passage should follow a coordinated route set by Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organisation. Reuters also reported that Iran has warned the waterway could be closed again if the blockade is not lifted.
Trump also said Israel was “prohibited” from bombing Lebanon as a 10-day ceasefire took hold and displaced residents began returning to their homes.
