President Donald Trump said he is nominating acting Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling to become the agency’s official leader following Lori Chavez-DeRemer’s resignation.
“Throughout his career, Keith has proven his dedication to delivering strong results for the Hardworking People of our Country, and I know he will do an incredible job in his new role,” Trump wrote Monday on Truth Social.
The announcement comes about two months after Chavez-DeRemer, a former Oregon congresswoman with ties to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, stepped down amid an investigation into alleged misconduct while in office.
Sonderling received early support from the business community to assume the Labor Department’s top spot, given his labor and employment law background and widespread support among employer-side attorneys. He previously served as deputy administrator of the DOL’s Wage and Hour Division and was a member of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
He was largely seen as running the day-to-day operations of the agency while Chavez-DeRemer was on her 50-state America at Work tour for most of last year.
Chavez-DeRemer was under intense scrutiny as the DOL’s office of inspector general investigated allegations that she engaged in travel fraud, had an inappropriate relationship with a member of her security detail, and drank in the office.
