Trump Severs “All” Trade Talks with Canada, Cites Ontario’s $75M Anti-Tariff Ad - Samfiru Tumarkin LLP

US President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social, his social media platform, that his administration is ending “all trade negotiations with Canada” due to Ontario’s $75-million anti-tariff ad — the alleged brainchild of Premier Doug Ford.

“The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about tariffs,” Trump’s post reads.

A disclaimer under the ad states that it wasn’t approved or sponsored by either the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library or the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation.

Ontario to Pull Ad

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Premier Ford said he spoke with Prime Minister Mark Carney and will be retracting the ad on Oct. 27 in the hopes that Canada-US trade talks can resume.

“Our intention was always to initiate a conversation about the kind of economy that Americans want to build and the impact of tariffs on workers and businesses. We’ve achieved our goal, having reached US audiences at the highest levels,” Ford post reads.

“I’ve directed my team to keep putting our message in front of Americans over the weekend so that we can air our commercial during the first two World Series games.”

It remains unclear if removing the ad will be enough to restart trade negotiations between Canada and the US.
