President Donald Trump’s nomination of Keith Sonderling to serve as Secretary of Labor comes as little surprise to DC insiders, and is mostly welcome news for the business community. The former labor and employment attorney has taken a business-friendly, compliance assistance approach to his work at the Department of Labor (DOL) as both the second-in-command Deputy Secretary starting in March 2025 and as Acting Secretary since April 2026. That includes relaunching a wage and leave compliance self-auditing program for employers and expanding the opinion letter program.
