Trump tells Republican delegates to back Matt DePerno for Michigan attorney general - MLive.com

Former President Donald Trump urged Republican delegates to nominate Matthew DePerno for Michigan attorney general, saying his opponent Tom Leonard is an “embarrassment” to the GOP.

Trump praised DePerno, a Kalamazoo attorney, for promoting unproven allegations of voter fraud “when nobody else would” while saying Leonard “represents the loser mentality of all the RINOs” who didn’t go along with efforts to overturn his loss. The former president endorsed DePerno last year before Leonard entered the race, but the letter is a more direct effort to influence the nominating process.

The former president publicized the Feb. 21 letter, which affirmed Trump is “fully invested” in Michigan’s 2022 elections, in a Sunday email to supporters. Republican Party delegates will meet April 23 to nominate one candidate who will face Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel in November. Delegates will choose between DePerno, Leonard and state Rep. Ryan Berman, R-Commerce Township.

Leonard was the party’s nominee in 2018 and has been a vocal supporter of the former president. Trump nominated Leonard for a U.S. Attorney post in 2019 but his nomination was effectively blocked by Michigan’s Democratic U.S. senators. Leonard was previously an assistant prosecutor in Genesee County and an assistant in the state Attorney General’s Office before serving three terms in the state House, including as House Speaker.
