A whistleblower has revealed that the U.S. Postal Service is secretly rushing through a “fundamentally flawed” new IT system that could disenfranchise millions of voters in the midterm elections, in violation of multiple court orders.
The USPS began developing the system in June in response to President Donald Trump’s executive order seeking to limit voting by mail, according to a whistleblower report published by Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut.
The president for years has spread baseless claims that voting by mail is a form of “cheating” plagued by widespread fraud, despite court records and independent audits finding voter fraud to be extremely rare—and despite Trump himself repeatedly casting absentee ballots.
The March executive order requires the USPS to regulate and approve absentee-ballot design, oversee a federal database of absentee voters, and assign individual barcodes to ballots, even though the Constitution explicitly gives states the power to administer elections.
Work on the new IT system was paused for about a month after the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals blocked the USPS from implementing Trump’s executive order, according to the whistleblower, who was identified only as a USPS official.
