Trump’s UN climate speech goes full MAGA

President Donald Trump spent nearly an hour today telling the United Nations it was wrong on pretty much everything — including, maybe especially, climate change.
“The ‘carbon footprint’ is a hoax made up by people with evil intentions, and they’re heading down a path of total destruction,” he told the 192 world leaders gathered at the U.N. General Assembly, in an address that sounded like countless other Trump speeches yet came at a perilous time for the global climate movement.
The speech, full of misleading and false claims, veered from lambasting Europe about its immigration policies (“Your countries are going to hell”) to accusing the U.N. of doing nothing but writing “strong letters.” Immigration and renewable energy, Trump said, are “destroying a large part of the free world.”
“You need strong borders and traditional energy sources if you are going to be great again,” Trump said.
Trump, of course, has long denied climate change. He pulled the U.S. out of the 2015 Paris climate agreement in his first term, and on resuming office, did it again. His administration has wielded the vast power of the federal government to favor fossil fuels and end regulations and incentives that favor clean energy.
