In a social media post, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala, falsely stated that “men were boxing against women” during the 2024 Olympics.
AL.com asked Tuberville’s office to provide any evidence that “men boxed against women” during the 2024 Olympics.
The senator’s office has not responded yet.
During the 2024 Olympics, boxer Imane Khelif became the subject of controversy after claims arose that she was transgender.
However, those claims were false as Khelif was not born a male, has never identified as being transgender, and is not intersex.
International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach defended Khelif at the time saying there was “never any doubt” she was a woman.
The Alabama Transgender Rights Action Coalition (ALTRAC) said that Tuberville’s comment demonstrates that anti-trans policies and rhetoric can harm cis-women who are not “feminine enough.”
“Tuberville’s false claim demonstrates what we’ve been saying for years — anti-trans rhetoric from Republicans is not about “protecting women,” it is about control. If Imane Khelif (a non-transgender woman) can get caught up in this rhetoric, so can any other woman Republicans deem too successful, too strong, or “not woman enough” — transgender or not. And that rhetoric is already leading to harassment of women who don’t present feminine enough — sometimes even by law enforcement! If Alabama Republicans really mean to protect women from harassment, their words and actions aren’t showing it.”
