TUC sets out roadmap for £15 minimum wage to end 'low-pay Britain' - People Management Magazine

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has set out a roadmap for the government to follow to reach a 15 per hour minimum wage that it said would bring “an end to low-pay Britain”.

Representing the majority of trade unions in Britain, the TUC has called on the government to work with the Low Pay Commission to set a new minimum wage target that is at 75 per cent of median hour pay (it is currently 66 per cent) to return the UK to, at the very least, pre-2010 levels of wage growth.

Currently, the minimum wage for those aged 23 and over is 9.50 per hour and, although the 2015 national living wage announcement elevated the minimum wage floor, the TUC believes the government can still go further.

The TUC stated that it wanted everyone, regardless of age, to be eligible for the same minimum wage, and for the government to start a move towards a 15 per hour minimum by bringing forward the next minimum wage uprating to October, as opposed to April 2023. This would allow for the minimum wage to be three-quarters of the median wage by 2030, it said.
