(SPRINGFIELD) A spring-like round of thunderstorms spawned several tornadoes around Illinois yesterday and last night. The National Weather Service reports two twisters were on the ground temporarily in Champaign County, while a tornado warning for DuPage County was issued when rotation was detected by radar. Two other tornadoes touched down in the Chicago area, further north, causing minor damage in Joliet and near Warrenville. Officials say there were no injuries in any of the touch downs, however damage to buildings, trees, and utility poles, plus several power outages overnight.
(SPRINGFIELD) Some state lawmakers have resumed their mission to require enhanced penalties for impaired drivers who kill someone and injure others. The current law allows a person to get a stiffer penalty if they kill a second person, but no automatic penalty if they kill one and injure another. The proposed legislation, known as “Lindsey’s Law” has been introduced each of the past several years with no committee advancement. The plan would pave the way for law enforcement to charge intoxicated drivers with a Class 2 felony if they kill someone and cause great bodily harm, permanent disability, or disfigurement of others. SB 1405 now sites in the Senate Special Committee on Criminal Law & Public Safety.
