Tulsi Gabbard sends criminal referrals for Trump whistleblowers to Justice Department - Toronto Sun

Tulsi Gabbard, the United States’ director of national intelligence, has asked the Justice Department to investigate two ex-government officials who played roles in President Donald Trump’s first impeachment inquiry.

A spokesperson for Gabbard’s office confirmed the news on Wednesday, per CNN. The referrals were for a whistleblower and an ex-intelligence community watchdog, although no details on the alleged crimes were released.

It’s now up to the Justice Department to decide on pursuing a criminal investigation.

The referrals, first reported by Fox News, come after Gabbard criticized how former Intelligence Community Inspector General Michael Atkinson handled the 2019 whistleblower complaint, releasing a number of documents linked to him, CBS News reported.

Concerns over Trump-Zelenskyy call

The unnamed whistleblower was reportedly concerned about a request by Trump for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to investigate then ex-vice president Joe Biden.

The complaint was also concerned about how records of a phone call between Trump and Zelenskyy were handled, and about the role that then-Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani had in the country’s relationship with Ukraine, CBS News reported.

“I have received information from multiple U.S. Government officials that the president of the United States is using the power of his office to solicit interference from a foreign country in the 2020 U.S. election,” the whistleblower stated.
