An internal probe into workplace abuse resurfaced as courtroom evidence years later
A California appeals court has tossed a defamation lawsuit a veteran television producer filed against the makers of the Nickelodeon documentary Quiet on Set.
The producer - creator behind hit children's shows including All That, Drake & Josh, and iCarly - sued in May 2024, arguing that Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV falsely implied he had "committed crimes of child sexual abuse" through its editing, imagery, and voiceovers.
The five-part series aired on the ID Network and streamed on HBO's platform from March 2024. Much of its runtime examined workplace culture across the producer's sets. Former colleagues described gender discrimination, a hostile work environment, and harassment of adult female staff. The documentary also detailed child sexual abuse committed by other Nickelodeon employees - individuals it identified separately, by name and image.
The producer's argument was narrower. He said the documentary's editorial choices - cutting to his photo during discussions of abuse, juxtaposing his name with references to criminal conduct - left viewers to draw a false connection between his on-set behavior and others' crimes.
The defendants responded with an anti-SLAPP motion to strike the complaint. California's anti-SLAPP law is built to stop lawsuits that punish protected speech. A Los Angeles Superior Court denied that motion in November 2024.
