WASHINGTON (TND) — The new edition of the "Twitter Files" detailed how members of the US government pressured the social media platform to censor people, including journalists.
Independent journalist Matt Taibbi posted the latest installment of the series on Tuesday.
Taibbi noted that California Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff wanted Twitter to ban investigative journalist Paul Sperry -- who was later suspended from the social media network for two years -- because Sperry identified the "anonymous whistleblower" who triggered impeachment proceedings against former President Donald Trump.
Schiff also wanted “any and all content” related to House Intelligence Committee staffers removed from the social network.
How is a Congressional leader demanding the banning of a veteran journalist from the nation's digital town square not state censorship?" Sperry tweeted shortly after Taibbi posted the latest information.
Sperry went on to praise Elon Musk, who recently purchased Twitter, and then launched the Twitter Files.
Before @ElonMusk, Twitter was just an app for the U.S. Intelligence Community -- FBI, DHS, ODNI, CISA and, now we learn, HPSCI" Sperry tweeted.
According to Taibbi, several agencies, such as the National Security Agency, the Treasury Department, and the Department of Health and Human Services, also wanted certain accounts suspended over concerns about the coronavirus pandemic.
