Tyler Shultz Says Theranos Experience Shows the Complex Realities of Whistleblowing - indica News

Tyler Shultz, the American researcher, company founder and key Theranos whistleblower, said he feared severe retaliation for coming forward.

“(Whistleblowers) are never able to work again, they’re looked down upon, and it’s like a black mark on their resume,” he said in a recent interview with indica.

Shultz believed that exposing Theranos would lead to the same result for him.

“To be honest, after I spoke about Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes and president Sunny Balwani, I actually experienced something completely different,” he said.

The response surprised him.

Shultz said he received messages of support from research institutions, biotech companies and venture capital firms soon after going public.

“When I went on the record with this story, people were reaching out to me from research institutions asking me whether I would do a PhD at their labs,” he said.

He added that he was grateful for the thousands of messages he received, including job offers he never expected.

Shultz co-founded Flux Biosciences and later the Healthyr Company, but the difficulties he faced during the Theranos saga extended beyond professional risks.

“He was definitely not my silent supporter. He was a vocal adversary,” Shultz said of his grandfather, who sat on Theranos’ board.

The conflict strained their relationship for years.

Shultz said that only near the end of his grandfather’s life did he acknowledge that Shultz had been right, though he never apologized.
