UAW's Fain assessing 'legal options' after report says DOJ probing him - The Detroit News

United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain said he is assessing his legal options after a report that the U.S. Justice Department is investigating claims he pressured another high-ranking union official to secure benefits for his fiancee and her sister.

Fain called the allegations "false." A federal grand jury has issued a subpoena to the court's union watchdog, according to Bloomberg News, citing internal communications within the Detroit-based labor group. Although investigations by prosecutors can end without any charges being sought, the probe increases pressure on the union weeks out from its International Executive Board election and as it seeks to free itself from a years-long corruption scandal that resulted in prison sentences for two former UAW presidents and other union officials and automotive executives.

"I’ve retained a law firm to fight against the Monitor’s trumped-up claims against me," Fain said in a statement. "What the Monitor is doing is wrong, it’s unfair to the UAW and to you as members, and my lawyers are looking at any and all legal options I can pursue to make it stop."

The monitor, attorney Neil Barofsky from law firm Jenner & Block LLP, last month concluded his investigation into allegations of retaliation by Fain against Vice President Rich Boyer, who now is running against Fain for reelection.
