Uber files whistleblower threatens to cancel attendance at European Parliament hearing - EURACTIV

Uber Files whistleblower Mark MacGann is due to speak at a hearing of the European Parliament alongside Uber Director of EU Public Policy Zuzana Púčiková, which would leave him “unprotected”, according to a letter obtained by EURACTIV.

The letter is signed by Jennifer Gibson, Legal Director of the Signals Network, an NGO specialising in supporting whistleblowers. It is addressed to European Parliament Employment Committee Chair Dragos Pîslaru.

“The format the committee has suggested would force Mr. MacGann to share a public platform with the organisation [Uber] at the core of his revelations”, the letter reads.

It added that it would “expose him to additional, unnecessary trauma and send a troubling signal that the European Parliament does not in fact value or protect whistle-blowers.”

The hearing, scheduled for 25 October, is part of broader European negotiations over the platform workers directive, which intends to provide legal clarity over the employment classification of platform workers.

MacGann would appear to “ensure that policymakers had the information they needed to better understand how platforms operate, based on his substantial experience of the sector”, the letter explained.

According to European Parliament officials EURACTIV spoke with, MacGann was asked to sit in a panel alongside Uber’s Púčiková, European Commissionner for Jobs and Social Rights Nicolas Schmit, former Uber driver Brahim Ben Ali and assistant professor Andreea Nastase.
